Ranchi, April 1: Hemant Soren has displayed more faith in P. Chidambaram than his own party leaders.
The JMM leader today strongly disapproved of the views of a section of his own party MLAs who have been demanding dissolution of the state Assembly, indicating he still harboured hopes of forming an alternative government with the help of the Congress
According to sources, Hemant while chairing a marathon meeting of the JMM’s working committee today at the residence of his father and party chief Shibu Soren, argued that seeking the dissolution of the Assembly would not be a correct political move.
For, he seemed to believe that an alternative government in Jharkhand with the help of the Congress would be possible anytime during July.
“Hemant quoted extensively from the speech of Chidambaram, delivered during the Budget session, wherein the Union Finance minister had hinted that Jharkhand would get a popular government very soon. We are not very sure about this. Chidambaram could mean a mid-term Assembly election, too, because, so far, the Congress has been cold to JMM’s proposal of an alliance government. But, we have no option except to accept what he says. The party will wait and watch,” rued a senior party MLA.
It is almost certain, Hemant has the backing of party president Shibu Soren. But for junior Soren, it is still a tough job to convince party seniors like Mathura Mahato who have been rather vocal in claiming the JMM was committing political hara-kiri by not taking a concrete stand on the matter.
A majority of JMM leaders were of the view that the party had suffered considerably, and lost its image among the public after withdrawing support to the Arjun Munda-led coalition government. It has come across as a party that is “ hankering for power,” admitted the leader.
But Hemant ignored such criticism.
Today’s meeting also discussed issues regarding the JMM’s poll preparedness, in the end declaring that it wanted to go it alone in the elections and fight all 14 parliamentary seats from the state.
A three-member committee comprising party MLAs Hazi Hussain Ansari, Mathura Mahato and Champai Soren was formed to survey all parliamentary constituencies and recommend eligible candidates.
